Samsung Galaxy S21 FE Review: The long-awaited new generation

How many questions and rumors were there about the new FE: then it is canceled due to the crisis in the semiconductor market, then it will be. And so, Samsung breaks all doubts, releasing in the midst of the New Year holidays Samsung Galaxy S21 FE. Like the previous model, the new S21 FE is somewhere between a flagship and an affordable device. A middle-class guy on steroids. We will not delve into the questions of why it was released before the announcement of the new line, but leave it for further discussions between fans of the brand.

A model without a box arrived for the review, so I can't say exactly what is in it. According to the official website, the box contains a Type-C charging cable, a paper clip for removing the SIM tray, instructions and the smartphone itself. The charging unit is not included.

The Galaxy S21 FE almost completely repeats the Galaxy S21. The back of the case is made of plastic, and an aluminum frame runs between the display and the back cover. It is worth noting that the flagship S21+ and S21 Ultra (S21 Ultra review) use glass at the back, while the simpler version uses poly carbonate.

The advantage of plastic can be called scratch resistance and the fact that it does not collect fingerprints. The case is protected from dust and moisture according to the IP68 standard. In terms of size, the Galaxy S21 FE is slightly different from the base S21. The increased display size from 6.2 inches (S21) to 6.4 inches (S21 FE), made it more elongated. There are no special differences in quality. There is also an in-screen fingerprint scanner that works quickly and without missing a beat.

As I wrote above, the S21 FE screen differs from the S21 only by an enlarged diagonal. All the flagship features are in place: 1080 × 2400 pixels resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, excellent color reproduction and brightness. There is support for the Always On Display mode, which can display auxiliary notifications.

The edges of the screen are not rounded, so no accidental taps. Maybe the curves look nice, but no matter how many similar smartphones I've had, I've always encountered random clicks. The display is located under the protective glass Gorilla Glass Victus. It is durable and does not collect scratches in the air.

So we came to significant differences. Unlike the Galaxy S21 with the Exynos chipset, the Galaxy S21 FE uses a powerful Snapdragon 888 processor, which has gained notoriety in the form of increased temperature release.

In the basic configuration, the smartphone is equipped with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of permanent memory. There is also a more advanced 8GB / 256GB version. I have on the test exactly the "standard" model with 6 GB of RAM. The S21 FE is fast and allows you to run games at maximum speeds, but sometimes the smartphone manages to get hot. However, this only happens when using heavy tasks.

As the full name says, the smartphone has received support for fifth-generation networks. In addition, there is NFC for payment, fast Wi-Fi 6, support for two physical SIM cards, but there is no eSIM support.

The most interesting thing is that the S21 FE uses optics from the S20 FE. A rather strange decision, but I personally have no complaints about the quality of the photo. It focuses quickly in all conditions and produces an excellent picture. Despite the use of a camera from the previous generation, the images are rich, bright and natural. What came out of this can be viewed below: Day, night, or any other shooting can be done without any problems. For the camera, a solid five.

How does it hold a charge?

The smartphone has a 4,500 mAh battery (the S21 has a 4,000 mAh battery) and this is more than enough for a full day of operation. In the background, the phone takes 2-3% for 10 hours of waiting.

Wired charging supports up to 25 watts of power, and a full charge from scratch takes about 2 hours. There is also support for wireless and reverse charging. The latter function is very helpful if you need to charge your headphones or share the charge with a friend.

To be honest, the new Galaxy S21 FE is not so striking and you don't want to shout "Wow!"from it. And it's still a mystery to me why Samsung abruptly decided to release this model almost before the release of the new S22 series. All that it has, we have already seen in earlier models without the prefix FE. The model is not bad and will appeal to those who want to save money, and the owners of the S20 and S21 can hardly like it.
