Review of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G Smartphone

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G is the third attempt of Koreans to teach the mass user to their smartphones with an unusual form factor of a folding tablet phone. The third generation has not become cheaper, but it has received some improvements. All details can be found in the new product review

Appearance and usability

The design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G has remained almost unchanged from the previous generation. However, despite the improved technical characteristics, the device has become even thinner and lighter-albeit by fractions of millimeters and a few grams (lighter by 11 g and thinner by 0.8 mm).

In any case, this is a very thick and heavy (271 g) bar, which is not very suitable for the title of a handheld device. Except for the pocket of a strong jacket. But people who buy the Galaxy Z Fold3 do so consciously, realizing that they are buying a folding tablet rather than a folding smartphone. It is the huge area of the almost square display with a diagonal of 7.6 inches, obtained at the opening, that attracts buyers of hot new items

The ergonomics of the smartphone is peculiar. It is impossible to open the device with one hand, and even more so to slam it back. At a minimum, you need to press the crease inside with your finger to start folding, otherwise there is no way. Yes, and with any manipulations with the halves, overcoming the resistance of a rather rigid hinge, fingers willy-nilly often grab the screen, pressing and activating something unnecessary. Naturally, there is a crease in the place where the screen is folded, and it seems that it will not go anywhere in future generations of folding screens.

You have to type text with two thumbs, there is no other way, and the virtual keyboard is divided into two parts. Well, or you can fold your smartphone and switch to a narrow external display.

There are small edges around the screen, so the surface should be less scratched. The factory film is pasted on top of the flexible polymer coating, but its edge does not reach the sides a little, and grease and dust collect between them.

By the way, the halves collapse with a loud thud of hard sides against each other. This sound can not be softened, even if you collapse barely opened halves. All the listed features of folding and unfolding ergonomics stem from the lack of a spring-loaded door closer. It is not here, because the creators of the smartphone offer the user the experience of using the device with the halves slightly open at any angle, and not just in a fully folded or fully unfolded state.

The case materials are state-of-the-art: the panels are finished with the latest generation of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, and the side frame is made of brushed aluminum. The smartphone does not slip in your fingers, prints on the glass panels with a grease-repellent coating remain difficult and quickly wiped off. There are no problems with this, the smartphone always retains a presentable appearance.

The fingerprint scanner is expected to be embedded here in the power button on the side (this is a universal option). The smartphone does not have a 3.5 mm audio output or a memory card slot.

Despite its small footprint, the scanner works flawlessly and quickly. The volume button doesn't protrude very much beyond the surface, and it's hard to find it blindly. And the power key with the scanner is completely recessed.

The device has two front-facing cameras: one ordinary, on the outer panel, and one unusual, in the inner part, used in the open state of the case. What makes it unusual is that it is the first sub-screen camera to display an image on top of it. The camera, by the way, is simple in its capabilities, "for show". But a precedent has been set, and then the evolution of sub-screen cameras will begin.

The only thing that can be said about the external screen is that it is very narrow and very elongated (25:9), so all the elements on it are small, sometimes it is difficult to hit them with your finger. With the exception of this, when folded, it turns out to be the most ordinary smartphone that functions absolutely fully, without the need to open it and switch to the internal display. That is, you can use a closed device in the same way as a regular smartphone, there are no restrictions. This is not a small extra screen with reduced functionality, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G clam shell.

With all the considerable thickness of the case, the cameras also stick out significantly from it, so the smartphone lying on the table sways when working with an external screen. In the open state, the device lies on a solid surface more steadily.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G smartphone is available in two calm colors: black and green. The case was protected from water according to the IPX8 standard (immersion for 30 minutes to a depth of 1.5 m), but officially has no protection from dust (this is indicated by the "X" in the abbreviation in place of the first digit — unlike some familiar IP68 standard).

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G smartphone is equipped with a flexible main AMOLED display with a diagonal of 7.6 inches and a resolution of 1768 × 2208. The physical dimensions of the screen are 12x15 cm, and the dot density is 374 ppi. The width of the frame around the screen is 4 mm on all four sides. A 120 Hz refresh rate is supported for the screen.

The external screen is also made on the basis of an AMOLED matrix, covered with a protective glass Gorilla Glass Victus, has dimensions of 55×144 mm, but when working with it, you should take into account the most cut rounded corners and an elongated aspect ratio of 25 that is inconvenient for displaying text.:9. So expect a comfortable perception of information from such a screen, especially text, is not worth it, it is less convenient than in the case of a regular smartphone screen. In fact, the screen is auxiliary.

The front surface of the large folding screen is made of plastic. Additionally, a protective film is pasted on the screen, which is forbidden to be removed, that is, it is part of the screen. The surface of the film is relatively resistant to scratches — at least, it was not possible to scratch it with a fingernail. The surface of the flexible screen is glossy and slightly uneven over the entire area, and there is a pronounced crease at the bend. However, this practically does not affect the image if you look at the screen more or less perpendicular to its surface. The external surface of the secondary screen is a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the small screen are better, and the large screen is about the same as that of the Google Nexus 7 (2013)screen (hereafter just Nexus 7). For clarity, here are photos where the white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left — Nexus 7, on the right — Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, then they can be distinguished by size and shape):

Additional Screen

The small screen of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G is noticeably darker (the brightness of the photos is 102 versus 110 for the Nexus 7), the large one is slightly lighter (its brightness is 112). Both screens don't have a pronounced hue. The doubling of reflected objects in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G screens is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the screen layers. Due to the smaller number of glass/air borders with very different refractive indices, screens without an air gap look better in conditions of intense external illumination. On the outer surface of the small screen of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, much better than the Nexus 7), and the film on the large screen, apparently, itself has such properties, so finger marks are removed much easier, and appear at a lower speed than in the case of ordinary glass.

When displaying a full-screen white field and manually controlling the brightness, its maximum value was only 400/410 cd / m2 (main/secondary screens) under normal conditions, but in very bright light it rises to 790/795 cd / m2. You also need to take into account the fact that in this case, the smaller the area of white on the screen, the lighter it is, that is, the actual maximum brightness of white areas will almost always be higher than the specified value. As a result, the readability of both screens during the day in the sun should be at an excellent level, and the dark theme not only saves battery power, but also contributes to better legibility of information on the screen in high light conditions.

The minimum value is 1.6 cd / m2 for both, which means that the reduced brightness level allows you to use the device without any problems even in complete darkness. Automatic brightness adjustment works based on light sensors (both are located under the screen, the large one is located to the left of the front camera, and the small one is located close to the upper edge to the left of the center). The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider: the user can use it to set the desired brightness level in the current conditions.

If you leave everything by default, then in complete darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 6/11 cd / m2 (a little dark/will do), in an office lit by artificial light (approximately 550 lux) sets it to 110/125 cd / m2 (normal), and conventionally increases it to 790/795 cd/m2 in direct sunlight (to the maximum, it should be). For the sake of the experiment, we first slightly increased the brightness in total darkness and made a series of measurements, then slightly reduced and measured the brightness again in different conditions.

The set brightness value was preserved in the dark, but it didn't change much in the office, and it always increased to the maximum in bright light. It turns out that the auto-adjust brightness function works adequately and, to some extent, allows the user to customize their work to meet individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is significant modulation with a frequency of 240 Hz. The figure below shows the brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis) relationships for several brightness settings:

Colors.

The gray scale balance is good. Color temperature, especially after selecting a profile Natural colors are close to 6500 K, but this parameter does not change very much on a significant part of the gray scale, which improves the visual perception of color balance. The deviation from the black body spectrum (ΔE) on most of the gray scale remains below 10 units, which is considered a good indicator for a consumer device, and the spread of this characteristic is also small:

Camera

At the back of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, three cameras are installed, and this is a "full-fledged" set of three different lenses with normal matrices (and not modules for macro photography, etc.). In general, the camera set is the same as that of the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

  • 12 MP, 1/1. 76", 1.8 microns, f / 1.8. 26 mm, Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS (Main)
  • 12 MP, 1/3. 6", 1.0 microns, f / 2.4. 52 mm, PDAF, OIS, 2× optical zoom (telephoto)
  • 12 Mp, 1.12 microns, f/2.2, 123°, 12 mm (ultra-wide)

The interface for controlling the camera and shooting is the same in terms of capabilities as other Samsung devices: you can save images in RAW format, there is a manual settings mode, background blur, night mode, AR, etc.But here you can still open the halves completely and get an additional preview window on the left — or half-open them in the manner of a laptop, and then the viewfinder will be on the upper half, In this position, you can shoot without a tripod, placing the device on a stable surface. And all three variants use a single set of three cameras arranged in a row.

The main camera has phase-locked autofocus and an optical stabilizer. Since the cameras are the same, the Galaxy Z Fold3 shoots almost exactly the same way as the Galaxy Z Fold2. No noticeable new "chips" have appeared, and there is also no breakthrough in quality. It is already quite good, both in daylight and in night mode. In good lighting conditions, the camera produces a detailed image with contrast and sharpness strongly emphasized in the Samsung corporate style, obvious object selection and bright embellished color reproduction. Such a picture looks good on the screen of smartphones and in social networks, but what else do most users need?

The wide-angle module can also easily please you with a beautiful overall image with good contrast and color reproduction that coincides with the main camera. Of course, the detail level is lower than that of the main module, but the increased sharpness fully compensates for it in everyday scenes, so that relatively small details are noticeable in the images, such as roughness of asphalt or tiles that do not merge into mush and do not resemble smeared plasticine. Yes, blurring around the edges of the frame is unavoidable. There is a function for smoothing geometric distortions, but its operation is poorly noticeable. And this is the only module of the three that does not have auto focus and stabilizer.

The lens of the long-focus module implements an optical zoom of only 2×, which is quite weak by modern standards. However, the quality of the image received from it is quite decent, during the day it is completely indistinguishable from the image from the main camera. The two-fold optical approximation can be fully used here. Then there is digital compensation, its limit is limited to 10×.

Telephone part and Communications

In Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, you can install two physical Nano-SIM cards, without support for a memory card. You can also use virtual e-SIM cards. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G supports a large number of wireless network frequencies, including 5G network standards (n79 band is not supported) and Gigabit LTE (2.0 Gbps reception, Cat 20).

  1. 4G FDD LTE: B1(2100), B2(1900), B3(1800), B4(AWS), B5(850), B7(2600), B8(900), B12(700), B13(700), B17(700), B18(800), B19(800), B20(800), B25(1900), B26(850), B28(700), B32(1500), B66(AWS-3)
  2. 4G TDD LTE: B38(2600), B39(1900), B40(2300), B41(2500)
  3. 5G FDD Sub6: N1(2100), N3(1800), N5(850), N7(2600), N8(900), N20(800), N28(700), N66(AWS-3)
  4. 5G TDD Sub6: N38(2600), N40(2300), N41(2500), N77(3700), N78(3500)

In practice, within the city limits of the Moscow region, the device demonstrates confident operation in wireless networks, does not lose communication, and quickly restores communication after a forced break.

The smartphone also has a wireless adapter that supports Wi-Fi 6E (802.11 a/b/g / n / ac/ax, 2,4 + 5 + 6 GHz, HE160, MIMO, 1024-QAM) and Bluetooth 5.2, NFC support is implemented. The navigation module works with GPS( with A-GPS), Glonass, Beidou, Galileo, and QZSS. The first satellites are detected quickly even during a cold start, and the positioning accuracy is not a problem. The other person's voice is loud and clear in the speaker. The vibration motor is quite noticeable even in such a massive case.

Software and multimedia

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G runs on the current Android 11 OS with a proprietary OneUI 3.1.1 shell. The interface is the same as that of other Korean smartphones, but there are some points related to the folding case. However, they also migrated from previous generations of folding devices, there is almost nothing new here. The proprietary set of basic applications works "seamlessly": you can switch from a small screen to a large one and back without closing the program. For example, this way you can type the text of a note. Let's repeat that the keyboard on the big screen is divided into two halves, and typing is convenient only with two thumbs.

Other apps may need to be reopened when switching from screen to screen. Although in the " Lab " section, you can try enabling the 5:4 format for any third-party application as experimental settings. The main functionality of this "open screen" format is to display information in two columns: for example, in one general list of settings, and in the second-the content of the current item. That is, in fact, these are two steps for the normal interface, and here they are shown simultaneously. Tablet users should be familiar with this.

And, of course, it is worth mentioning the advanced system of "windows": they can be pulled out, reduced to the state of an icon (ball), stretched, placed one above the other. It's just a pity that you can't open two windows of the same program (say, a file manager) and drag information between them. It would be convenient. Especially with a stylus. Branded pen S Pen the device supports, and two types: normal or special for this model (S Pen Fold Edition), although neither one nor the other is not included in the kit and the smartphone does not have a stylus slot in its case.

Video Playback

This unit supports DisplayPort Alt Mode for USB Type-C — output images and audio to an external device when connected to a USB port. We tried working in this mode together with the Dell DA200 adapter (not the best choice, since it does not have external power). (Program Report usbview.exe.)

When connected to our monitor, the video output is in 1080p mode at 60 Hz frame rate. There are two modes of operation: duplicating the smartphone screen and working in Samsung DeX mode-displaying an alternative desktop. The user selects the operating mode. In Samsung DeX mode, an alternative desktop image is displayed on the monitor screen, and the smartphone screen can be used as a touch panel for coordinate input or work as usual.

Battery life

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G received a built-in battery with a decent volume. But even with it, the device shows more modest autonomy than many modern smartphones. And this is expected with such an irrepressible SoC: high autonomy can not boast of all smartphones on Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, and not just Korean ones.

Testing has traditionally been performed at a normal level of power consumption without using power-saving functions, although these are available in the device. Test conditions: set the minimum comfortable brightness level (approximately 100 cd / m2). Tests: continuous reading in the Moon+program Reader (with a standard, light theme); continuous viewing of videos in HD-quality (720p) via a home Wi-Fi network; the game Injustice 2 with auto-settings of graphics.

Result

You can buy Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G in Pakistan is Rs. 299,999. Price of Samsung in USD is $1860.  (depending on the configuration). As before, this smartphone is "not for everyone", which means that you can set any price for it, which Samsung does, clearly not being tied to sales volumes. Be that as it may, the third incarnation of the folding smartphone of Koreans is no longer "overcoming the barriers of the impossible", but a systematic improvement of what has been passed.

The case was reinforced, provided with moisture protection, used an unusual sub-screen camera and added functionality for working with an electronic pen. Here, perhaps, are all the innovations, not counting the appearance of 5G support and the use of the latest and top-end SoC. Cameras, screens, sound, autonomy-everything remained almost at the same level.

Mass popularity, judging by the reviews in the networks, folding smartphones still have not gained, and therefore we continue to treat the Galaxy Z Fold family as a series of smartphones for geeks, fans of everything technically unusual, as well as those who are tired of the monotony of standards and are ready to experiment, having enough funds for this.
